'Kairos' Rocket explodes shortly after liftoff in Japan

Japan's first private-sector Rocket 'Kairos' explodes after liftoff

A much-anticipated moment turned into disappointment as Japan's first private rocket, named Kairos, exploded midair moments after its launch from Wakayama Prefecture, central Japan. Developed by Space One Co., the rocket was set to mark a historic milestone by placing a satellite into orbit, a feat yet to be achieved by a Japanese private company.

Setback in Commercial Space race

The Space One rocket, carrying the government satellite, burst into flames just seconds after liftoff, scattering debris over nearby mountains and into the sea. Despite hopes for a successful launch, the unfortunate incident dashed Japan's ambitions to join the competitive commercial space race.

A video from the launch event captured the rocket engulfed in a massive plume of smoke, with efforts made to extinguish the blaze. Thankfully, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The launch, originally scheduled for March 9, faced delays due to a vessel discovered in the evacuation zone.

Impact on Space One and Backers

Founded in 2018 with support from investors like Canon Electronics Inc. and others, Space One aimed to carve a niche in the commercial space mission market. The failure not only dealt a blow to Space One but also impacted its backers, including Canon Inc., which experienced a significant drop in shares following the explosion.
